I like your concept on “green-ness.” You get your message across with imagination. I don’t know who is telling her not to kick the bottle over, but the message is still there. The value and color in your project could be improved. Everything must tie together more. I learned in painting that value and color are very important to making everything come together or come apart. I still have trouble with this concept and it can be challenging. If you added green to the other side of the wate it could have helped. Maybe changed the color of the text to a white or light green it could bring the piece together. Maybe even lighten up the dark green grass a bit. I guess I have already commented about your use of value. The background could be stronger.

Your concept for this project is very good. It makes a strong point. As far as value is concerned, there is probably room for a little improvement. The value of the background could be altered to help the verbiage stand out or by making the “text box” more opaque. I like the layering of your design as it does lend it to appear 3-D. I am not comfortable myself with value so my input may not be much help. Great job!!

    Martha,

Your composition is quite interesting; there’s a lot going on. The difference of value of color on the rocks makes it look very three dimensional and the water very smooth and fluid; however, some of the images looks “off.” (I had a bit of trouble with conveying value as well.) The fish looks very sharp compared to the water. The value of it did not go very well against the background; I think it needs to be a bit darker and softened a bit to match.
As I had pointed out with the fish, there are some areas that are really bright and some very dark. I think if you had blended in the images and concentrated on where the light was coming from, the overall piece would look as one instead of “different images on one canvas”, or so to speak. Overall, I think you did well, just need to play a bit with the values of the images. Good job!

Sorry Martha, it seems as if I forgot to include what question I’ve answer to a lot of posts! I answered question 1 of the critique questions for your image. I apologize for the inconvenience/clutter.

      Project 2 Critique – Value
      1. How is value used in the composition? (Creates 3-d, use of light and dark, mood, contrast). Be specific, if value missing or weak include that also.

Value is used very well in this composition, with the waterfalls being a little lighter than the rest of the compostition. This keeps the focus on what the two people are doing because they appear darker, but you still get the idea of water because of the waterfalls in the background.

    3. How is color used in the overall composition? Which colors dominate which reinforce the concept? How is color value used in composition? Be specific and use terms related to color.

The color’s used in this piece help add to the emphasis of water conservation. The colors in this piece are muted and sharp. This variation allows for a different value to be seen by the viewer, this variation gives the piece added depth. The color that dominates the most of the composition is that of gray. The meaning of the gray can be seen as a connecting factor to the rest of the piece. The variations in the gray allow the piece to flow from one part to another. Great Job!
